Drivers, start your engines because the Gazoo Racing (GR) Saudi Driving School is now open in Jeddah.
Located at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit parking lot, the temporary school will be open from Tuesday August 15 to Sunday August 20 to develop motorsports in Saudi. The school is a collaboration between Abdul Latif Jameel Motors and the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation (SAMF).
Ahead of the launch, the Gazoo Racing Driving School had over 2,000 people registered for the Future Driver programme. Of the 60 who were shortlisted, nine were women.
The GR Driving School will offer a five-day training programme to identify and nurture the next generation of racers for the GR Saudi Team. The candidates will be focusing on four disciplines: Time Attack, Hill Climb, Drift (not exactly the Fast and the Furious kind), and Autocross.
Autocross is literally a race against time where you have to complete a specific track in the shortest time possible. Drifting is all about how well you can control your car while sliding through tight corners at high speeds and clean angles. Drifting is one of the only few races where style and flair can earn you points. In a Hill Climbing race, you have to speed uphill for three kilometres in the shortest time possible and in Time Attack you have to complete a long track as quickly as possible without losing control.
After the rigorous two-day training course, 15 students will be shortlisted and undergo final training at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit where they will be able to unleash their need for speed. The programme will end with a final test on the Jeddah Corniche Circuit where real racing conditions will be simulated. The best four performers will be chosen to represent the GR Saudi Team and make their debut in the Saudi Toyota Championship.
