Saudi invites residents to sight the Ramadan crescent moon on Sunday March 10

The start of Ramadan could soon be upon us.

That’s because Saudi’s Supreme Court has called on all Muslims in the Kingdom to sight the Ramadan crescent on Sunday March 10.

The Supreme Court asked that people who see it with the naked eye or through binoculars notify the nearest court to record the testimony there or contact the nearest centre to help them get to the nearest court. This is to determine the start of Ramadan 2024.

The appearance of the crescent moon signals the start of the month, as is the case with all months in the Islamic Hijri calendar.

Ramadan 2024 will only officially begin when a moon-sighting committee confirms it has seen the crescent moon.

If spotted on Sunday, Ramadan will begin on Monday March 11.

If not, the month will likely start on Tuesday March 12.

Ramadan is expected to last for 29 or 30 days this year, with the first day of Eid al Fitr likely falling around Tuesday April 9.

During Ramadan, Muslims are required to elevate their level of spiritual and physical submission to their faith by way of fasting.

The abstention from eating and drinking is intended to last from dawn until dusk throughout the 30-day period.

To support those fasting, Saudi usually reduces the working hours in the Kingdom.
